‘Senior Open Letters’: An Alternative Senior Night For OUA Athletes

August 9, 2021

February is usually a month filled with celebration of Senior athletes, to play 4 or 5 years and not get your special night feels wrong. But that’s exactly the reality that many U Sports athletes across the country had to face this 2020/2021 season. Nationwide there are over 20,000 varsity athletes, with 9,500 of them coming from Ontario University Athletics (OUA), however there were 0 senior nights. This is something we wanted to change, we wanted a way to honour these exceptional student-athletes and all the sacrifices they have made over the course of their careers at different institutions.

Our goal was to specifically highlight OUA basketball seniors commitment, sacrifices and lessons learned while being a student-athlete. This led us to featuring 6 seniors across the province, allowing them to share their story and get the recognition they deserve, through a video series called the ‘Senior Open Letter’. We released these videos across all our social media platforms, most notably Instagram TV and YouTube.

Although we were only able to feature 6 athletes, our thoughts are will all seniors across the country, as we salute them and wish them all the best in their future endeavours. We are very thankful for the senior athletes that decided to use our platform, trusting us to share their journey and all it means to be a student athlete.
